The Cure Reveal First Album in 16 Years, Share Single ‘Alone’
Songs of a Lost World is The Cure’s follow-up to their 2008 album, 4:13 Dream.
The Cure’s first album in 16 years arrives November 1. Songs of a Lost World was produced by the goth rock acts frontman Robert Smith and Paul Corkett at Rockfield Studios in Wales. The band plans on sharing the album’s tracklisting on their new website in the coming weeks, which is where you can also pre-order a copy of Songs of a Lost World.
The 80s icons have also released the first single from the album, ‘Alone’. Clocking in at nearly seven minutes, this atmospheric number is a little unexpected. While it retains The Cure’s moodiness, the track is purely instrumental until the three-and-a-half minute mark when Smith chimes in with the opening lines, “This is the end of every song that we sing / The fire burned out to ash and the stars grow dim with tears.”
In a statement about the track, Smith says ‘Alone’ is “the track that unlocked the record. As soon as we had that piece of music recorded I knew it was the opening song, and I felt the whole album come into focus.
“I had been struggling to find the right opening line for the right opening song for a while, working with the simple idea of ‘being alone’, always in the back of my mind this nagging feeling that I already knew what the opening line should be… as soon as we finished recording I remembered the poem ‘Dregs' by the English poet Ernest Dowson… and that was the moment when I knew the song - and the album - were real.”
