Hobart’s iconic winter festival Dark MOFO makes a surprise return in 2024.

The 11-day festival will run from June 13 to June 23 and feature crowd pleasing events such as the Winter Feast, Nude Solstice Swim and Winter at the Garden, albeit with a scaled-back music program.

The unexpected revival of Dark MOFO comes after the festival’s artistic director Chris Twite announced the event was going on hiatus due to “rising costs and challenging conditions” in September of 2023.

“I know we said Dark Mofo would stay quiet, but Winter wouldn't feel the same without the chance to feast and frolic during the long Tasmanian nights,” Twite said in a statement last week confirming the return of this awesome Hobart festival.

Although this year’s event is smaller with fewer international guests, the program is still chock full of Dark MOFO favourites sure to appeal to anyone who’s experienced this epic festival before.

The Winter Feast returns and will include 80 stallholders and feature guest chefs Vaughan Mabee (Amisfield) and executive chef Vince Trim, the culinary genius behind the menu at The Museum of Old and New Art (MONA).

The Nude Solstice Swim will be bigger than ever with an increased capacity and Winter at the Garden will have a daily program of DJs, food and drink pop-ups with Genesis Owusu and Marlon Williams confirmed as musical guests. The multi-story dance party Night Shift is back, along with the debut of Slow Burn, a late-night event for those who like to party into the wee hours.

MONA will also be holding a new exhibition, Namedropping, that looks at status, culture and what big brand names really mean.

Tickets to Dark MOFO go on sale this Wednesday April 17. Head to the Dark MOFO website for all the details.
