Two of Australia’s favourite singer-songwriters are teaming up for a special musical project. Former Powderfinger frontman Bernard Fanning and Something for Kate’s Paul Dempsey have taken to social media to reveal they are working on something together under the alias Fanning Dempsey National Park.

The duo both took to their socials and posted the same photo of them enjoying a takeaway together. The image was accompanied by the caption: “We’ve been cooking something up together, be the first to know and follow our new account Fanning Dempsey National Park to find out why BF ended up with Carol Brady’s hair and why this looks like the sequel to Twins.”

They followed this up yesterday with a second post on the official Fanning Dempsey National Park social accounts. This one is an image of the two in the studio accompanied by the caption: “During 2022 we started sending each other song ideas to see where it would go. Pretty soon we realised we were coming from really compatible places. Can't wait to share what we've been up to. Follow Fanning Dempsey National Park to be the first to hear.”

This post also features audio of a 70s synth jam that is quite the departure from both Fanning and Dempsey’s normal output and hints at an interesting direction for this new project.

This isn’t the first time Fanning and Dempsey have crossed paths, with Something for Kate supporting Powderfinger on tour in the late 90s. Fanning even collaborated with Something for Kate on their most recent album, 2020s The Modern Medieval. The band recorded the album in Fanning’s Byron Bay studio, enlisting the singer-songwriter to contribute vocals on the track ‘Inside Job’.

The two also dueted on a cover of Queen and David Bowie’s ‘Under Pressure’ during the lockdowns as part of Dempsey’s series of online collaborations with other Aussie artists.
