Art Gallery of New South Wales’ much-loved Volume festival returns in 2024, with Outkast member turned flautist André 3000 headlining the festivities.

Volume will feature four incredible musicians playing shows across July, with André 3000 performing his new album New Blue Sun live over two special nights alongside multi-instrumentalist Carlos Niño, guitarist Nate Mercereau, keyboardist Surya Botofasina and drummer and synth player Deantoni Parks. This will be his first solo show in Australia and first live performance since he played Splendour in the Grass with Big Boi as part of Outkast in 2014.

Also appearing at this year’s event are former Sonic Youth vocalist, guitarist and bassist Kim Gordon, ARIA award-winning rapper Genesis Owusu and Zimbabwean–Australian rap meets pop superstar Tkay Maidza.

Running from Friday, July 5 to Sunday, July 21, the performances will be held in the Art Gallery’s forward-thinking venue The Tank. The former World War II oil tanker has been turned into a state-of-the-art performance centre that aims to push the boundaries of music, art and live performances.

Along with live music, Volume will include a program of free events to be revealed in the coming weeks.

“Through Volume, the Art Gallery of New South Wales will bring the best of contemporary music and art together in an inspiring and unique location,” said New South Wales Minister for the Arts, Music and the Night-time Economy and Minister for Jobs and Tourism, John Graham, in a press release. “The program and the location offer artists and audiences a chance to experience something bold, ambitious and truly memorable.”

Art Gallery of New South Wales director Michael Brand added: “We are thrilled to be inviting some of the most innovative and bold local and international musicians to the Tank to create unique music experiences that will make audiences think, feel and move. We look forward to seeing how each artist responds to this remarkable space.”

Pre-sale tickets for each show go on sale on Tuesday, May 21 at 10:30 am local time. You can register for pre-sale here. General sale commences on Wednesday, May 22 at 10:30am local time via the Volume Sydney website.
