YUNA

Japan’s subtle, umami flavours are right at home at Yuna. Opening its doors in February, the eatery has become a go-to for lunchtime legends thanks to its contemporary take on traditional dishes. A gooey tamago egg salad shokupan sando, Sansho chicken and rice bowls and grab n-go onigiri are menu standouts. However, we can’t help reaching for a bowl of chashu pork tonkotsu ramen when the temperature drops. Yuna gets bonus points for massive mugs of matcha, fresh pastries and cheeky cups of sake, too!

nightshade

Adelaide’s newest bar, Nightshade, is what happens when you put Cry Baby and Sunny’s Pizza in a blender. It’s an electric, ’80s-soaked venue fitted with neon lights, a mirrorball and a synth-pop playlist on repeat. However, the gaudiness of the disco era is, thankfully, forgotten here. Instead, Nightshade has distilled all that big-hair, bright-coloured energy into a casually-sophisticated bar. Of course, there’s still some welcome tackiness to it... you’ll find us on the d-floor sipping bright-blue, maraschino-decorated cocktails and dancing to Madonna’s greatest hits.

ondeen

Ondeen is the spot for long lunches. Chef Kane Pollard and winemaker Rose Kentish took the task of transforming the Heritage-listed site of Maximillian’s (c.1850) upon themselves, and the result is otherworldly. A desire to forage, grow and source produce from the local community underpins the small plates menu, which is also designed to reduce the food waste issues common in hospitality. Vine leaf with sticky pumpkin and chicken broth, and raw venison with foraged berries & hemp seed cream are some seasonally-inspired courses you can enjoy alongside a spirit flight by Full Circle Spirits.

From McLaren Vale’s Hey Juj comes Hey ZoZo’s, the latest beachside coffee spot to try. Re-inventing what was formerly Homesick Henley, the light and bright café has quickly become a favourite destination for iced oat lattes, fresh pastries and homemade sandos. While the venue can seat 26, the menu is designed with busy people in mind, allowing you to grab-n-go flavour-packed yet easy-to-eat snacks on the way to the beach. Best of all, it’s away from the hustle and bustle of Henley Square but close to all the ocean action.

francesca’s pizza + sandos

Francesca’s Pizza + Sandos is on a mission to make portafoglio pizza popular in Adelaide. What the hell is a portafolio pizza, you ask? A Naples street eat where topping-laden pizzas are folded into the shape of a wallet. Convenient? Yes. Authentic? Of course. The trick of Francesca’s light, fluffy and easily foldable pizza is its dough, which is proofed for 48 hours. You can devour traditional Napoletana pizzas and freshly baked focaccia sandos, too – we’ve got our eye on the goomah pizza, with salami and a drizzle of hot chilli honey!
