Some critics have described rising Melbourne via Adelaide singer-songwriter Ricky Albeck’s music as ‘post pub-rock’. While there’s some truth to that, listening to his debut album Nocturnal reveals an artist who’s charting his own musical journey free from genre constraints. Take album highlight ‘She Wasn’t Anyone’. Although written five years earlier, this spirited ballad with a country twang feels right at home alongside Albeck’s more recent creative endeavours. The rollicking guitar riff will have your head nodding while the addition of strings gives the song its point of difference. The slow orchestral climax, complete with soothing, layered harmonies, brings ‘She Wasn’t Anyone’ to a poignant and satisfying conclusion.

Sounds like: Alt-country vibes.
