COLDWAVE - NO CONFLICT
COLDWAVE – NO CONFLICT
EP
P.A.K records
There’s no time to rest for post-punk six-piece, Coldwave. Only six months after their debut EP release, the band have treated us with another trio of songs that wiggle inside your brain and make it burst.
No Conflict is a ten minute crash course into everything that Coldwave does best. Smart and introspective lyrics meet an urgent pace, an abrasive onslaught of guitar noise, feedback swirls and surprising yet smooth trumpet sounds. It’s tight and punchy and this month’s must-listen. It’s also one of those records you must listen to in order.
The EP’s self-titled track is a sharp, spiky and short inhale. But as quick as the clash of noise swells (the song is only two-and-a-bit minutes long), the listener is invited to take a beat. An exhale arrives with ‘Conflict’, the spaced-out and spoken word song layered with anxious thoughts – just like that weird headspace you enter after a big conversation. The pace picks back up in concluding track ‘Haircut Song’, where vocalist Harry Evans takes us through his experience of a trim: ‘Sit me down, gas me up, mister simmerdown’. It’s a loud and layered close – one that demonstrates that Coldwave knows exactly how to control this agitated, chaotic sound.
