My Space: Lili Harrison

What makes a truly creative space?

Image and words by Timothea Moylan

When The Note meets with Lili Harrison, the artist, stylist and furniture maker is getting ready to throw the doors open to her newest venture, Household. Supported by Renew Adelaide, the gallery and studio space is the latest project heralding a brighter future for the city’s west end – a place for emerging artists, by emerging artists.

What was your vision for Household?

It’s a gallery and creative studio – somewhere young people can get their foot in the door. I’m really excited about our residency program, which will let an emerging artist have their own studio in the heart of the city and exhibit in the space. There’ll also be a photography studio and a small retail section that showcases work by Adelaide-based artists and small businesses – think knitted bags, jewellery, glass pieces and ceramics. Unique pieces that wouldn’t be stocked elsewhere locally.

I think we need more people in Adelaide to stick around and facilitate creative spaces. If everyone leaves because they think there’s not enough to do, then the generation behind us will feel the same. I want to influence change. I want to create something for myself and also people coming up. I want to be the older sister to this community.

How have you found establishing a creative space in a building that’s been empty for 30 years?

It’s the biggest thing I’ve ever done in my life. [Evolving] this space felt huge. But I’m really excited! The building was in shambles, but it allowed me to create my own reality from scratch. It was my dream to do this and I’m lucky to have a really great community around me who have lent a hand. This place wouldn’t be anything without the people who are ready to be a part of it.

What challenges have you come up against?

I deal with imposter syndrome all the time. I have a bit of a love-hate relationship with that. I’m always asking myself ‘Is this good enough?’ but I think it pushes me to be the best version of myself.

Where have you taken your inspiration from?

I’m inspired by film. I’m inspired by books. I’m inspired by the people around me. I’m also inspired by my parents and my family – we’re all very independent, driven people and that’s so inspiring for me. I owe a lot to them.

Last question! What are your go-to songs when working?

This is so self-helpy, but I listen to a lot of fashion and business podcasts! I also listen to a lot of old American country. It just makes me feel happy – like I’m on a road trip in summer. And a bit of rock, blues, jazz, R&B – I don’t discriminate with music!

Household opens from 6pm on Friday, September 6. Head to @householdpresents for more info.
