YOUR GUIDE TO ADT’s CULTIVATE:ONE

Art, culture and community are just three things you can expect from Australian Dance Theatre’s newest season, Cultivate:ONE

THE EXPERIENCE
The Odeon will become a playground for Adelaide’s art scene this November for Cultivate:ONE, ADT’s latest season showcasing a series of works devised by emerging choreographers and company dancers, Brianna Kell, Sebastian Geilings and Zachary Lopez.
Explore and experience art at your own pace, meandering between performances with friends and making pit stops at the independent bars manned by Little Bang Brewing and Miss Zilm. Listen to live music, hang out and become acquainted with what ADT is all about. Cultivate:ONE runs from November 17 to November 25 at ADT’s home, The Odeon.

HOW MUCH OF YOU IS REPETITION?

Emerging choreographer Sebastian Geilings summarises his latest work How Much Of You Is Repetition? as an ‘evocative journey through the absurdity of healing’. The surrealist work taps into the many facets of dysregulation, exploring the quirks of human response to trauma. Sebastian is endlessly curious about how we move through the world, using dance as his vehicle for surveying themes of queerness, healing and liberation.

DOWN TRODDEN PUNK

Drawing parallels between the ‘White Australia Policy’ and 16th century Catholicism in the Philippines, choreographer-dancer Zachary Lopez examines the ‘power of language as a tool of oppression’ in Down Trodden Punk. Stark and confronting yet significant and necessary, the work connects the dots between our history and control through language. As an Australian-Filipino, Zachary’s practice focuses on the duality of identity and experience of the ‘other’, which has led him to create works for Sydney Dance Company and Sydney Festival.

NOW/AGAIN

Choreographer and ADT dancer Brianna Kell explores time and its passage in new work, NOW/AGAIN. Moving between multiple perspectives, the piece investigates the intimacy of human connection and its intricate links with time. NOW/AGAIN adds to Brianna’s portfolio of work that explores ‘the digestion of time’ and everything that emerges from it. Her innate curiosity about the world and artistic talent has seen Brianna create commissioned work with Sydney musos Party Dozen, plus dance with Tasdance, Chunky Move and Stephanie Lake Company.

LIVE ART BY SHANE COOK

It’s likely you’ve seen Wulli Wulli and Koa artist Shane Mankitya Cook’s artwork across Adelaide, splashed on big buildings or colouring busy alleyways. The award-winning mural maker is best known for his bold work that blends his interest in street art and tattooing with First Nations practice and design. His work – which you can see in places like the Adelaide Central Market – is inspired by his connection to Country and community. At Cultivate:ONE, catch Shane creating contemporary art live.

DRINKS, PLEASE

Cultivate:ONE is as much about the experience of the evening as it is about celebrating emerging contemporary dancers. That’s why ADT has enlisted some of your favourite drink pourers to provide beverages throughout the six-show run. Expect frothy small-batch beers from Stepney’s Little Bang Brewing and flavour-filled, minimal-intervention from Miss Zilm, who’s part of The Usual Suspects Collective, and a pop-up gin bar. Sip on these independent libations as you soak up the thought- provoking works or some sun outside The Odeon.

TUNES BY DUCK! RADIO

duck! radio calls itself a ‘broadcast platform [that’s] wading through the subcultural swamp’, transmitting funky beats and less-traversed sounds to listeners in SA every Sunday live from the Adelaide Bike Kitchen workshop. For Cultivate:ONE, the minds behind duck! radio are leaving their cool pond to play live at The Odeon. As you mingle and move between performances, the DJs will be soundtracking your evening experience.
