Forming in Long Island, New York in 1985, Public Enemy released their debut album, Yo! Bum Rush The Show, two years later and took the rap world by storm. Mixing social commentary with assertive beats, lifelong friends Chuck D and Flavor Flav created a militant sound that hooked audiences.
But it was the group’s sophomore effort, 1988s It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back, that truly launched the career of Public Enemy. Universally praised by critics and receiving a perfect score from music publications including Pitchfork, NME and The Source, the album spawned the charting singles ‘Bring the Noise’, ‘Don’t Beleive the Hype’ and ‘Night of the Living Baseheads’ while also topping the Billboard Hip Hop/R&B Album chart. It remains not only one of the greatest hip hop albums of all time, but one of the greatest records ever released.
Public Enemy continued to be a force throughout the early 90s, dropping the classic albums Fear of a Black Planet and Apocalypse 91… The Enemy Strikes Black while becoming well known for their electrifying live performances.
Despite going through constant lineup changes over the journey, the group has gone on to become one of the most respected hip hop acts, with Chuck D and Flavor Flav the two constants. With 15 studio albums to their name, including 2020s What You Gonna Do When the Grid Goes Down?, eight Grammy Award nominations and a place in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Public Enemy has done it all.
See Public Enemy perform at AEC Theatre in Adelaide on Friday, October 4. Full ticketing information is available via Ticketek.
