FRINGE REVIEW: ZIRQUE LA LA
A fabulous evening of burlesque, cabaret and comedy.
Words by Kate Johnson
The Festival Plaza was home to the Pink Palace – where you’re invited to a fabulous evening of burlesque, cabaret and comedy. There was a growing buzz among the crowd which intensified when four lucky audience members were buttered up and convinced to get on stage and dance.
Our first disco contestant rocked flamingo glasses, while the next, a leprechaun, looked like he was made for the stage. The audience was delighted when a young man shook his booty in strap-on arse cheeks. Everyone was howling with laughter, drunk and turned on at the same time. Our French host was very cheeky, asking the young gent if he’s “got any French” in him. He didn’t stop there – “Do you want any?” he playfully enquired. “He didn’t say no!”
The entertainment was non-stop. There were feathered beauties coloured like burlesque Wiggles who danced in total synchronicity. A male dancer completed a flawless toe-touch jump. Men raised their plastic cups to an opera-infused rendition of ‘Creep’ by Radiohead. A human counterweight climbed down a structure while a man floated above the crowd holding a woman only by his teeth.
Everyone was taking selfies – proof that we were having fun. To top it off, there was the expected dig at our city: “I’ve heard Adelaide’s shit the rest of the year – until the V8s come.”
Zurique La La was seriously good fun. When there are feathers, food trucks and good vibes on a balmy Adelaide night, how can you complain?
Be sure to join the party at The Pink Flamingo Spiegelclub next Fringe and experience one of the best shows of the festival.
