What five songs would you take to a desert island?

1. Red Hot Chili Peppers – ‘Under the Bridge’

2. The Killers – ‘Mr. Brightside’

3. David Gray – ‘This Year’s Love’

4. Angus & Julia Stone – ‘Big Jet Plane’

5. Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros – ‘Home’

If you could only pick one, what would it be?

‘Under the Bridge’ would be my pick of the bunch. The Chilli Peppers were the soundtrack to my childhood and whenever I hear ‘Under the Bridge’ it gives me a sense of nostalgia.

What’s your favourite album?

Dark Side of the Moon by Pink Floyd. I’m a sucker for anything ’60s to ’80s and I love how this album transitions from one song to the next. It’s the album for all occasions, whether it be to drive to, have on in the background or to blast on a Saturday night. And the instrumental of ‘Any Colour You Like’ is hard not to groove to.

What’s your favourite song by an SA artist/band?

‘The Nosebleed Section’ by Hilltop Hoods.

Favourite music-related memory?

I interviewed a couple of guys from Ocean Alley on the morning of Heaps Good and then came back to the festival later that day. I took my now-girlfriend on our first date and not long after being there, we found ourselves in the artist lounge catching up with Ocean Alley and hanging out with Cam from King Stingray for a couple of hours while G Flip, Spacey Jane and Chvrches walked by. Ocean Alley were about to hit the stage so we decided to venture outside and catch their set with the ambition of watching it side-stage. We got to the back of the stage with the band warming up at the top of the flight of stairs just meters away. When they saw us, the band dropped their gear, ran downstairs to carry me up just minutes before they were due to entertain thousands with their biggest hits. I found myself dancing all set, trying to make sense of the day and how I’d become so fortunate to be where I was.
