In the Green Room: Babe Rainbow

This January, sun-soaked psychedelic surf rockers Babe Rainbow are cruising into town with a kaleidoscopic party gig. Lead singer Angus Dowling gives us notes on the vibe.

You’re about to head off on a nationwide tour – are you keen to be cruising the country again?

We’re very keen to come back to the South Australian beaches – they’re beautiful. I just did a trip down from Perth through to Byron Bay. The Yorke Peninsula was the best spot! Everyone’s so happy in Adelaide – maybe it’s because [SA] has such beautiful wine.

What can punters expect?

You know how, when you first start as a band, you only have a few songs so you play all of them? Well now it’s exciting because we’ve got more songs – so we can play all our party [tracks] and some new music as well. It’ll be a big rainbow party. James Brown and the Hippie House vibe.

You had a massive year touring the US and playing festivals over there. How do American crowds compare to Aussie punters?

It was so good to get back over there! It’s cool [in the US] because there are so many more people, but the vibe is the same between the American and Australian crowds. Both have an epic vibe.

You’re kicking off the year with a stacked Australian tour. What else can we expect from you in 2023?

We’ve got some new songs we just recorded, and we’d love to have a new one out before the tour starts. We’re heading to New Zealand on the same weekend we’re going to Adelaide. Otherwise, we’ll just be coursing around, gardening, going to the beach and hopefully doing a few more tours.
