In the Green Room: Northeast Party House

It’s been a while since we’ve heard from alt-indie dancefloor rockers, Northeast Party House. But they’re back with a banging new single ‘Brain Freeze’ and they’re touring the east coast to celebrate its release. Bass player Oliver Packard tells us more...

Congrats on the launch of ‘Brain Freeze’! You’re hitting the road to celebrate the single release – how do you feel heading on tour?

It’s great to play our own live shows! We’ve done DJ sets and festivals over the last [few] years, but nothing beats playing our music live. It’s also a great opportunity to spice things up and make it a real experience for everyone.

Tell us more about how the new single came to life.

In 2017 we were furiously writing demos for Shelf Life. Everyone [had] free rein to write anything [and] between the six of us, we ended up with at least 100 demos. Shelf Life was born out of that, and the rest of the tracks mostly sat in the dust of our Google Drive. One [of the unused tracks] was called ‘Mynt Slyce 6’ and had this cool little guitar line… Fast forward to 2022, when Sean and Zach were looking through old demos – they found this golden nugget and had a vision of what it could become. It was cool to see this old demo turn into such a sick song.

Is ‘Brain Freeze’ a sign of more to come from the band? What’s next for Northeast Party House?

Yeah, there’s lots of music currently in the works. I’m very excited about the next track we’ve got coming out. And as clichéd as it is, “big news is coming”!

You’re playing at The Gov this time but you’ve previously said SA is one of the band’s favourite places to play. What makes it so special?

From the early days, when we would drive eight hours past pink [salt] lakes to play to 40 people, there was such a fun buzz in Adelaide. We’ve met some amazing people at our shows – such as Big Red who’d wear a custom NPH t-shirt for every tour. There was a stint where it felt like we played Fat Controller every six months – I love how grimy that place feels. I also love how everything is so close in Adelaide. Once you’re done with a show, you step out onto Hindley Street and the party starts again!

Catch Northeast Party House at The Gov on June 3. Tickets on sale now.
