NOV 17 - NOTEWORTHY NEW RELEASES

Another week, and a plethora of local tracks, clips, EP’s and albums. A range of bands, solo artists, and producers across genres shows the strength of Adelaide’s music scene at the moment and once again should serve as encouragement to get out of the house and suss a local gig.

OSCAR THE WILD - SHE’LL BE RIGHT (EP)

The all-girl 4-piece band, Oscar the Wild, has recently unveiled their much-anticipated debut EP, 'She'll Be Right.' The group, forged from sisterhoods and strong friendships in 2018, gained attention with their earlier track, 'Pinch Me Please,' which not only secured them the coveted position of Unearthed Track of the Day but also earned them the title of Feature Artist. Building on this momentum, their latest release, 'Unafraid,' not only landed them a spot at BIGSOUND but also caught the eye of a Rolling Stone USA writer, who identified them as one of the ones to watch at the festival. The Adelaide indie rockers are undoubtedly on an exciting trajectory, and there's much more to look forward to from this talented group.

ELIZA DICKINSON - CHAMPAGNE (SINGLE)

Eliza Dickinson seamlessly blends elements of R&B, Jazz, and Soul, incorporating unique grooves and synthesizers into her music. Her latest release, 'Champagne,' is a follow-up to her debut EP, 'Gold,' crafted in collaboration with New York-based producer Drew Ofthe Drew. Presently, Eliza Dickinson is collaborating with a diverse array of special guests hailing from Adelaide, New York, and LA for her upcoming debut full-length album. 'Champagne,' released in conjunction with 'Red Door,' will be featured on the forthcoming album, promising an exciting continuation of her distinctive musical journey.

MUMS FAVOURITE - LOVE BOAT (FILM CLIP)

Mums Favourite, the recipient of the 2023 SA Music Award for Rock, has released a new film clip for their track "Loveboat." This release comes on the heels of their recent single, "Wind in the Willows." "Loveboat" transports listeners to a bygone era with its soft, soulful tones, complemented by a punchy, powerful chorus featuring exceptional vocals. Both the song and the accompanying film clip enhances the '80s vibe, drawing parallels to the TV show of the same name.

Check out the full clip here.

JON ANN - F WITH ME (SINGLE)

Adelaide's Jon Ann, known for their pub punk/grunge vibes, has recently expanded from a duo to a formidable four-piece. Their latest track, "F With Me," is a powerhouse anthem. It's what you need when you're a bit downtrodden and sick of everyone's nonsense. Behind the scenes, Jon Ann worked with ARIA award-winning engineer Anton Hagop (known for his work with Silverchair) for the mix. Mastering duties were entrusted to the acclaimed George from Little Wing Sound, a maestro who has left his mark on artists like Smith Street Band, Ruby Fields, and Dear Seattle.

BABY CANDY - WHAT’S WORSE (SINGLE)

Welcome back, Baby Candy! It’s been two years since this garage psych-rock and fuzz band released a tune, with ‘What’s Worse’ arriving via PAK Records in early November. Clocking in at just under five minutes, this sweet track departs from the pace and punch we’ve previously heard from the four-piece. But, true to form, Baby Candy has spiked this slower song with talent to boot, clearly demonstrated in the seriously impressive guitar solo ‘What’s Worse’ gives way to around the three-minute mark. We can already see the punters swaying in the crowd to this one. Big love!

STURT AVENUE - STILL IN LOVE (SINGLE)

Sturt Avenue’s latest single has been out for close to a month now but our love for this new song hasn’t faded in the slightest. With its jangly and groovy tune, ‘Still in Love With You’ is a break-up track that’ll you dancing despite harbouring a sore heart – the best way to get over a lost love, in our opinion. It also showcases a pacier side to the folk-indie outfit – one we’d love to see more of. There are big things to come from this seven-piece, we’re sure of it.

BLIND COYOTE - ON MY OWN (SINGLE)

One week on from Blind Coyote’s release of ‘On My Own’ and it’s still firmly lodged in our head. This earworm of a track talks about the lost love and big feelings of past romances, smoothly delivered by frontman Paul Christensen. And while this song brings some chill to the three-piece’s signature coastal groove, it’s still punctured with the band’s hallmark indie-pop noise. Soft and sophisticated, ‘On My Own’ is perfect for when you’re in your feels.

NOCTURNAL ANIMALS - PANIC ATTACK (FILM CLIP)

Adelaide’s own dance punk trio have released a new film clip for their latest single ‘Panic Attack’. Directed by Matt Caporaso, it’s inspired by 80s horror films, think ‘The Thing’, ‘The Fly’ and Hellraiser. We had a quick chat to the trio about the clip, their upcoming collaboration beer with Pirate Life, and their set at Froth & Fury.
Why bring Panic Attack to life in a music video? “The same way that McDonalds wanted to put fish on to the menu, we wanted to bring the song to life in a music video,” the band say. Also stating that director Matt Caporaso is the only director who can handle their “increasingly stupid ideas”.
