FIRST IMAGE OF PROPOSED CRANKER REDEVELOPMENT TOWER REVEALED
The 19-storey student accommodation tower will include an “ancillary shop / café on the ground floor and associated amenities.”
The first image of the proposed student accommodation to be constructed on the current site of the historic Crown & Anchor has been revealed by Plan SA.
It shows an ugly, brown high-rise erected on the site at 188 – 196 Grenfell Street. As reported by InDaily, the image was handed to the custodians of the Cranker yesterday afternoon (Thursday, April 18) for display.
Listed as Application 24003065, a short paragraph describing the proposal details the multi-level student accommodation will include an “ancillary shop / café on the ground floor and associated amenities, services, underground water tank and landscaping.”
The north-east view of the site reveals a block-shaped building towering over the corner of Grenfell Street and Frome Street, with the 171-year-old watering hole conveniently obstructed by trees and a yellow bus.
Despite the application explaining the planning permission allows “partial demolition and adaptive reuse of a Local Heritage Place,” the image shared makes it hard to tell if the façade is still intact and how much of the original building will remain if the development goes ahead.
Interestingly, the proposed tower is 19-storeys high despite the area being zoned for buildings up to 15-storeys.
The design release has caused more outcry from Adelaide locals upset with the proposal. The good news is Cranker regulars can have their say on the proposal by leaving a comment on Plan SA’s current notified developments page. People can leave their thoughts on the development from today until midnight on Sunday, May 5.
The groundswell of support for the live music venue has continued to grow since Singapore-based developer Wee Hur Holdings applied for planning permission to build student accommodation on the site of the Crown & Anchor.
An online campaign called Save the Cranker has been established to fight the development, with a Facebook page also set up. An online petition via change.org has also been organised and gathered almost 20,000 signatures.
Last week a successful council meeting was held to pass a motion to alert premier Peter Malinauskas and other parliamentary figures to the development plans and force them to take action.
In more positive news, the Adelaide Music Collective (AMC) has announced the Cranker will be inducted into the South Australian Music Hall of Fame for “its decades of commitment to 'Original Live Music'.”
