JONI MITCHELL’S MUSIC RETURNS TO SPOTIFY
Following in the footsteps of Neil Young, Joni Mitchell is allowing her music to once again be available via Spotify.
After Neil Young allowed his music to be re-uploaded to Spotify last week, contemporary Joni Mitchell has followed suit. Similar to Young, she removed her extensive catalogue from the streaming service in protest of Joe Rogan, who spread misinformation about COVID-19 on his hit podcast The Joe Rogan Experience. The return of Mitchell’s music to Spotify comes two years after she and Young both took a stand against the platform and Rogan.
Unlike Young, who took to his website to write a short blog begrudgingly explaining his reasons for rejoining Spotify – mainly due to The Joe Rogan Experience now streaming on Apple and Amazon, as well as Spotify – Mitchell said nothing, with her music quietly appearing on the streaming service late last week.
Mitchell stood in unity with Young when she removed her music in 2020, taking to her website to proclaim: “I Stand with Neil Young!”
Her short post said “I’ve decided to remove all my music from Spotify. Irresponsible people are spreading lies that are costing people their lives. I stand in solidarity with Neil Young and the global scientific and medical communities on this issue.”
In the time between her music leaving and coming back to Spotify, Mitchell has been super busy, returning to performing live, picking up an honorary doctrine from the Berklee College of Music and winning her tenth Grammy Award for Best Folk Album (Joni Mitchell at Newport).
Although she hasn’t released a new album since 2007s Shine, Mitchell is a revered artist and one of the most influential singer-songwriters of all time. Her return to the stage has been welcomed by fans, with Mithcell coming out of retirement to perform on the final day of the Newport Folk Festival on July 24, 2022. Since then she has played sporadically, including her first Grammy performance at this year’s awards. She has also booked two shows at the Hollywood Bowl for October 19 and 20 later this year.
You can listen to Joni Mitchell’s entire back catalogue on Spotify now.
