‘One Way’ is the first of two never heard before Michael Hutchence songs being released this month.
At the time of his passing in 1997, Michael Hutchence was in the middle of recording his self-titled debut album. He was working with a host of talented musicians and producers, including Gang of Four guitarist Andy Gill, Black Grape producer Danny Saber and Bomb the Bass‘ Tim Simenon. While the album would eventually see the light of day two years after Hutchence’s death, the majority of tracks on the record were from sessions involving Gill. But now we are getting not one, but two unreleased tracks the former INXS frontman collaborated on with producer Saber.
Brooklyn Vegan premiered the first song, ‘One Way’, which is built around Hutchence’s acapella vocals. It has a very late 90s guitar rock vibe and a hint of Led Zeppelin’s ‘Kashmir’. The second track, ‘Save My Life’, will be released in the coming weeks.
Speaking with Brooklyn Vegan, Saber revealed he has been working for over 20 years to bring this music to the public. “Some of the songs were featured in the Last Rockstar documentary, but the full mastered versions were not released with the airing of the film as the Last Rockstar was only broadcast in Australia and New Zealand,” Saber said.
“One of the fundamental reasons for releasing this music is to give the fans the opportunity to hear Michael’s voice on something new and fresh offering a glimpse into what might have been, and, in turn, reawakening millions of people who may have simply forgotten about him. I want to share that perspective as I really feel Michael’s story has so much relevance and value on so many levels. And along the way we can hopefully shift the focus to how he lived, and not how he died.”
Both songs will be released on 10” picture disk single vinyl on May 15 via Boss Sonics. You can pre-order your copy of the dual single vinyl here.
