Californian alt-rock icons Stone Temple Pilots are celebrating the 30th anniversary of their critically acclaimed sophomore album Purple with an Australian tour next year.

Purple was a monster hit in 1994, topping both the Billboard 200 Album Chart and the ARIA Album Chart. The record spawned the US Mainstream Rock #1 singles ‘Vasoline’ and ‘Interstate Love Song’, with Kerrang! claiming the album “offered a new gateway into a corridor of rock that many adolescent music geeks didn’t yet know existed.”

The current lineup of guitarist Dean DeLeo, bassist Robert DeLeo, drummer Eric Kretz and vocalist Jeff Gutt have locked in four headline performances and two festival appearances as part of their 2025 tour.

The band’s Australian tour kicks off in Sydney at ICC Sydney Theatre on Friday, February 28. The quartet then perform at the Hello Sunshine Festival in Melbourne on Saturday, March 1 followed by gigs at Hindley Street Music Hall in Adelaide on Monday, March 3, Nex in Newcastle on Wednesday, March 5 and Fortitude Music Hall in Brisbane on Friday, March 7. The final date of the tour takes place on the Gold Coast at the second leg of the Hello Sunshine Festival on Saturday, March 8.

Wolfmother will support Stone Temple Pilots on their solo headline dates, while the Hello Sunshine Festival lineup includes Smash Mouth, Kasey Chambers, Drapht and more. For all the details visit hellosunshinefestival.com.

Pre-sale tickets go on sale this Thursday, September 5 at 8:30am. You can register here. General on-sale begins Friday, September 6 at 8:30am via Teamwrk Touring.

Speaking about their appearance at Hello Sunshine Festival, the band says: “Australia has got to be one of the coolest places to play. The people there know how to party! We are so excited to head back to Australia to perform at the Hello Sunshine Festival in March. It’s going to be amazing. Summertime! Outdoor Festival! Australia! Yes, please!”

Originally formed in 1989, Stone Temple Pilots consisted of the DeLeo brothers, Kretz and vocalist Scott Weiland, arguably one of the greatest voices of our generation.

The band hit the big time in the mid-90s, revitalising the rock scene after the demise of grunge. One of the most successful rock acts of that period, STP have sold over 18 million albums in the United States and 40 million worldwide. The group released four studio albums in the 90s – Purple (1994), Tiny Music... Songs from the Vatican Gift Shop (1996), No. 4 (1999) and Shangri-La Dee Da (2001) – before parting ways in 2003.

Reuniting in 2008 and going on to release their self-titled sixth album in 2010, the band would eventually part ways with Weiland in 2013 after his battles with drugs and alcohol impacted the band. STP recruited Linkin Park’s Chester Bennington on vocals while Weiland went solo before tragically dying of an accidental overdose in 2015.

The Bennington experiment lasted a couple of years before Jeff Gutt took over as the band’s frontman in 2017. He has recorded two albums with the STP, 2018’s Stone Temple Pilots and 2020’s Perdida.

The chance to watch STP perform the hits from Purple along with fan favourites and deep cuts is an opportunity not to be missed.
