If you’re going to name your EP WELTZSCHMERZ (a German/Romantic term for world-weariness), you better make sure your music has a kind of weight behind it that accurately mirrors the concept. With the EP’s second track – ‘Set Course For Somewhere’ – Home Court proves that they didn’t just pull the record’s title out of a hat filled with obscure 19th-century literary terms. If this song had a body, it’d be lumbering down the home stretch of a marathon, its limbs heavy and burning with fatigue. The guitars sound like blisters, the abrupt tempo switch-ups make it feel as though the band are tripping and stumbling towards a finish line they can barely see through watery eyes, and the fuzzy chord progressions drift and warble at the track’s centre, as dense as pillars of industrial smoke.
If this doesn’t sound world-weary enough for you, consider taking a long walk under the bluest sky you can find.
Sounds like: Waking up in the morning and deciding to try, despite it all.
