Aussie legend Daryl Braithwaite has announced a surprise gig at The Gov this coming September. The former Sherbet vocalist will hit Adelaide on Saturday, September 14.

The news comes after Star Special Events quietly revealed Braithwaite has three more shows lined up, two in Tasmania and one in Perth.

This mini-tour Australian tour appears to be in support of Braithwaite’s unexpected 2020 single ‘Love Songs’. The radio-friendly pop tune came out of the blue and reached #43 on the ARIA Single Chart, Braithwaite’s highest chart position since his 1993 single, ‘The World As It Is’.

‘Love Songs’ was originally meant for pop superstar P!nk. “Roger (Davis, P!nk’s manager) finally got to hear it and said, ‘It suits you more than P!nk, and she’s not recording at the moment’,” Braithwaite said in a statement about the song. “I was relieved. So, we went ahead and recorded it.”

Braithwaite is one of Australia’s great singer-songwriters and the chance to catch him live at The Gov is an opportunity you don’t want to pass up. The ARIA Hall of Fame inductee got his start as the frontman for 70s rock act Sherbert. Songs like ‘Howzat’ and ‘Summer Love’ propelled the band to the top of the charts before Braithwaite went solo in 1984.

While his debut album, Out on the Fringe, didn’t fare well commercially or critically, the follow-up was a monster hit. Edge claimed the #1 spot on the ARIA Album Chart and spawned the hit singles ‘As The Days Go By’ and ‘One Summer’.

His third album Rise only made it as high as the #3 spot on the ARIA Album Chart, but did provide fans with another chart-topping single in the form of ‘The Horses’. Certified 10x platinum, the song is what Braithwaite is best known for. An unofficial Australian anthem, it’s a song Braithwaite has made a career from, with the larrikin singer often performing it at horse racing events around the country.

Fun fact: the song is actually a cover, with the original written and sung by Rickie Lee Jones in 1989.

Braithwaite’s popularity has only increased in recent years, especially after Harry Styles invited him to sing' The Horses' at Accor Stadium in Sydney in front of 60,000 people.

Tickets for Daryl Braithwaite’s show at The Gov are on sale now via The Gov.
