The piano mastero wil play a very special farewell solo recital at Adelaide Town Hall.
Piano virtuoso David Helfgott returns to Adelaide for one final show at the Adelaide Town Hall this August.
This special solo recital is part of Helfgott’s ‘Farewell Tour’, with the concert pianist playing his last shows in Melbourne, Perth, Brisbane, Sydney and Adelaide.
The four interstate gigs will see Helfott performing his favourite solo piano works of Chopin and Liszt while also performing Rachmaninov's third piano concerto alongside British pianist, Rhodri Clarke.
Helfgott’s Adelaide recital is a solo concert featuring the pianist performing Beethoven's heroic Appassionata sonata, the famous Warsaw Concerto and cherished pieces by Chopin, Liszt and Mendelssohn.
“I’m incredibly privileged to tour David on his farewell tour so he has an opportunity to see his fans once more,” promoter Andrew Kay AM said in a statement.
A child prodigy, Helfgott studied at the Royal College of Music in London where he won several awards, including the Dannreuther Prize for Best Concerto Performance. Struggles with mental illness meant he never completed his degree, returning to Australia where he pursued music when he could.
It wasn’t until the 1996 movie Shine, a biography about Helfgott’s life, that the pianist became recognised by the wider community for his musical endeavours. Since then he has toured the world and released several albums, but now at the age of 76, Helfgott has decided to retire from performing live and enjoy his final years.
Tickets for David Helfott’s final Adelaide performance at Adelaide Town Hall on Sunday, August 11 are on sale now via Ticketek.
