DJ YELLA PLAYING THE BRIDGEWAY HOTEL THIS MONTH
The former N.W.A. member will be supported by Lil-Eazy-E, the son of hip hop legend Eazy -E.
Vibin Events and Kode Blak Records present the one and only DJ Yella live in the flesh this month at the Bridgeway Hotel.
The OG West Coast hip hop DJ and producer, who found fame as a member of pioneering hip hip act N.W.A., is heading to Australia for four shows as part of his ‘Stright Outta Compton Tour’.
DJ Yella will play shows in Adelaide (Bridgeway Hotel, Friday, May 24), Brisbane (Mansfield Tavern, Saturday, May 25), Darwin (Monsoons, Friday, May 31) and Townsville (Mansfield Hotel, Saturday, June 1) as part of his whirlwind trip across the country.
Co-headling the tour is Lil Eazy-E, the son of the legendary MC Eazy-E. The two, who have been touring together for several years now, will take to the stage together and take audiences on a journey through hip hop history, performing classic N.W.A. and Eazy-E tracks along with modern cuts and Lil Eazy-E’s solo material.
Also along for the ride is Melbourne’s DJ Kidd Benny while some of Adelaide's best local acts will also take the stage in the form of A.Ware with JussT, Taiaha, El Schnobes & Host Monsta Ganjah.
DJ Yella has been an important part of hip hop culture for over five decades. The Compton native began spinning records as a teenager, hosting a local club night where met Dr. Dre. The two soon became friends and formed the electro-hop group, World Class Wreckin’ Crew.
An underground success in the Los Angeles rap scene, it wasn’t until the formation of N.W.A. in 1987 that DJ Yella became household. Along with Dre, Ice Cube, Arabian Prince and Eazy-E, the group became breakout stars with their debut album, Straight Outta Compton, flipping hip hop on its head and laying the foundation for gangster rap.
DJ Yella would play a large part in the success of N.W.A., helping to produce the group’s two albums, Straight Outta Compton and Niggaz4Life, along with the EP, 100 Miles and Runnin'. He also handled production duties on Eazy-E’s debut album, Eazy-Duz-It. After N.W.A. split in the early 90s, DJ Yella continued to work with Eazy-E, producing his final album, Str8 off tha Streetz of Muthaphukkin Compton. He worked with several high-profile artists in the intervening years, including Bone Thugs-n-Harmony, before dropping his debut solo album One Mo Nigga to Go in 1996.
Soon after he quit the music business and got into pornography, directing around 300 movies during a 12-year career behind the camera. Reuniting with his former N.W.A. members in 2016 when the group was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, DJ Yella was tempted back into performing, linking up with Eazy E’s son, Lil Eazy-E.
Carving his own path in hip hop while celebrating his father’s legacy, Lil Eazy-E marries classic West Coast beats with his authentic style, telling his own story through intricate raps bridging the gap between hip hop's golden era and the present.
Don’t miss your chance to catch hip hop royalty in the flesh when DJ Yella and Lil Easy-E hit the Bridgeway Hotel on Friday, May 24.
