DECEMBER: FIVE VENUES TO KNOW
A few more places to add to your food and booze bucket-list...
LONGPLAY BISTRO
From the brains behind Pink Moon Saloon and Clever Little Tailor comes Longplay Bistro. Owners of this Pirie Street haven say Longplay is a ‘summation of some of our favourite things’: thoughtful wine, considered hospitality, and vinyl sounds. Lenin Paunovic (Late Nite Lenny) is the soul responsible for curating the vibe with his LP record collection, while co-chefs Jude Hughes and Calum Horn bring their wealth of experience (Three Blue Ducks, The Summertown Aristologist) to the plates of house-made pastas and Euro-inspired sharing dishes. As for drinks, the ever-growing wine list is 24 pages long and curated by the owners themselves, featuring Australian classics, underground makers and international stars.
YES PLEASE: Spaghetti, clams, chili, lemon and pangrattato.
WHERE: 131 Pirie Street, Adelaide
STEM
The west end of Hindley Street feels like a cool city borough thanks to venues like Stem. The exposed- brick interior is softened by warm timber tables and lots of overhanging foliage. The vibe is like an inviting greenhouse, only with a little more edge and a lot more wine (the venue houses one of the city’s largest wine cellars). Soak up some sun on the pavement with a spicy marg or book in a big group for a dinner of seasonal and locally-sourced courses. For an extra fee, your evening meal can be paired with the venue’s impressive wine stock. How good!
YES PLEASE: Lobster sando with dill aioli, iceberg and vinegar salt.
WHERE: 188 Hindley Street, Adelaide
BAR RIOT
Bar Riot is a firm favourite in The Note office thanks to the fizzy wine, zesty cocktails and produce plates they serve inside their cool-white venue. It’s the perfect place for five o’clock drinks on a Friday night. Think slices of sourdough topped with anchovies and balsamic, marinated olives and local cheeses to share, lychee spritzers and plenty of sunshine outside on the pavement (or inside with the air-con if the mercury tips too high). If your office is in the city, the eatery also serves lunchtime subs from midday, featuring OG flavours like Spanish meatballs with Manchego cheese or slices of salumi and provolone, sprinkled with black olives. Love!
YES PLEASE: Calabrian salami toast drizzled in hot honey and piparras.
WHERE: 57 Gilbert Street, Adelaide
ERN MALLEY
Named after Adelaide’s infamous literary hoax, Ern Malley is the newest neighbourhood spot in the east. The bones of this Magill Road venue date back to the early 1940s, but returning US- expat, documentary filmmaker Paul Gallasch, has breathed new life into the space with a lick of green paint, an old piano and a scattering of vintage furniture. Unlike its namesake, this bar hosts book launches and readings from real authors and poets regularly (pop in for James Donald Forbes McCann’s launch, December 3). The walls are also lined with books, available to purchase or flick through. And if you need more encouragement to visit Ern Malley, there’s live jazz on Fridays and mornings filled with coffee, crepes and bloody marys every Saturday.
YES PLEASE: Fresh oysters, thanks!
WHERE: 137 Magill Road, Stepney
NIÑA
New restaurant Niña is what happens when an acclaimed cheesecake baker, FOH star and viral food blogger join forces and take on Adelaide’s dining scene. Nestled underneath Sofitel Hotel, this moody venue takes cues from the tapas bars famed in Barcelona and Madrid. Nights here start with a sangria carafe to share, followed by punchy plates of pintxos (think grilled octopus) and larger, flavour-packed courses (the lamb backstrap with Olasagasti anchovy salsa is a win!). Dessert is also a must. Co-owner Leo Loureiro (Basque by Leo) is a master at making velvety smooth and caramelised Basque cheesecakes, and slices of this are served generously. Arrive hungry – you’ve been warned.
YES PLEASE: Spencer Gulf king prawns with lime aioli, chilly and cherry tomato.
