Pub Grub: Four Venues To Know

Classic feeds found in Adelaide’s inner city.

the gov

It’s a long-term favourite for westside residents for a reason. Smash plates of salt and pepper squid, twice-cooked pork belly and a classic steak sanga inside this quirky, well-loved pub before a gig. What better way to enjoy a show than when fully fed? The Gov also serves homemade wood-fired pizzas, fancy dishes like chilli prawn pasta and a piping-hot pie of the day. Wash these down with a pint of SA beer before moving into the band room.

Yes Please: Twice-cooked pork belly on cauliflower puree, fennel and apple salad, topped with vincotto.

Where: 59 Port Road, Hindmarsh

The exeter hotel

This heritage hotel is best known as an institution for music, but its food and booze offerings are also impressive. Bottles of Krug Champagne and Rockford Basket Press Shiraz are served alongside stacked plates of chicken schnitzels, scotch fillets and Reuben sandwiches. Colder weather calls for a generous serving of the Exeter’s weekly curry special and a classic pint of Coopers. Devour this and more around a crammed table in the beloved beer garden.

Yes Please: Duck, Orange & Tamarind Pie with buttery, creamy mash and jus.

Where: 246 Rundle Street, Adelaide

gilbert hotel

Something’s always happening at the Gilbert Street Hotel. Happy hour, pub grub deals and neighbourhood Sunday specials make this venue a well-loved institution for anyone who lives in postcode 5000. However, Wednesdays and Thursdays are a real treat: exchange $20 for a kilo bowl of buffalo wings slathered in a sauce of your liking. Yum! You’ll also find local and live music here most nights of the week.

Yes Please: It’s hard to go past the wings, but the Paroo kangaroo sirloin with beetroot puree, caramelised Brussels sprouts, Jerusalem artichoke crisps and jus.

Where: 88 Gilbert Street, Adelaide

unibar adelaide

“Cheap beer, good pizza, live music, happy times.” This is how UniBar Adelaide markets itself, and it says it all, really. It’s the place to be for university students searching for a flavour-filled and wallet-friendly feed. Destroy $11 schnitzels on Tuesdays before coming out on top in the weekly pool tournament or devour an equally cheap burger post-tutorial on Thursdays. Snackish? You can’t go past the poutine, which doesn’t skimp on gooey cheese and gravy.

Yes Please: $11 pizzas on a Wednesday. We recommend the diablo. Bellismio!

Where: Ground Level Union House, University of Adelaide
