Check out the Elder Conservatorium Jazz Department’s involvement in the 2024 Jazz Relay celebration for UNESCO International Jazz Day.

It’s UNESCO International Jazz Day! In celebration of the 2024 event, 10 groups of artists from 10 different UNESCO Cities of Music – including Adelaide – have been invited to perform their own take on traditional Korean lullaby, Bird, Bird, Blue Bird for the annual Jazz Relay.
Students from the Elder Conservatorium Jazz Department came together or collaborate, arrange and perform the piece of music, which was originally supplied by the Park Si Neon Trio from fellow City of Music, Daegu, South Korea.
Filmed by Liam Somerville and Julian Hatch, produced by Capital Waste Pictures and recorded/mixed by Dylan Cooper, the filmed performance was then spliced into the official 2024 Jazz Relay video. Travelling across six continents, the clip also captures performances in Bolzano in Italy, Glasgow in Scotland and Concepción in Chile.
The focus for this year’s Jazz Relay is promoting how the power of music can bring people together, offer solidarity in uncertainty and inspire change for a better future – in particular, a commitment to climate action. This mission cuts to the heart of Bird, Bird, Blue Bird, which calls for greater, global sustainability movements.
Jazz has long been a genre that’s moved this city. In the lead up to International Jazz Day, the Adelaide Jazz Festival showcased South Australia’s music pedigree alongside a host of international names. And tonight, Thomas Voss Big Band will play to a sold-out crowd at the Dunstan Playhouse in celebration of UNESCO International Jazz Day.
But don’t fear if you’ve missed out on these shows! City of Adelaide is hosting a free Jazz in the Square twilight community concert this Friday, May 3. Listen to some of the finest jazz musicians to grace this city while cosied around an al fresco fire pit. Find out more here.
And congrats to all the people who make up Elder Conservatorium Jazz Department! Here’s who participated in the video: Victoria Katsoulis (Trombone) | Emily Dennis (Baritone Saxophone and Clarinet) | Daisy Davidson (Alto Saxophone) | James Ho (Bass) | James Nisbet (Drums) | Mark Simeon Ferguson (Musical arrangement and piano).
