Adelaide hip hop fans often get a raw deal when it comes to international touring acts and today is no different. After announcing their first Australian tour in 12 years, The Roots have left Adelaide off their itinerary.

This news comes a week after Public Enemy, another legendary rap group, cancelled their Adelaide show due to “unforeseen scheduling issues.” Tough times.

Those on the East Coast will be shouting with joy after The Roots revealed they are performing in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane during the first week of January 2025 as part of their whirlwind Australian tour.

Joining them for all three shows are Brooklyn-based MC Talib Kweli and Hiatus Kaiyote frontwoman Nia Palm.

The iconic hip hop ensemble will welcome the New Year with a performance at Sidney Music Myer Bowl in Melbourne on Wednesday, January 1. The Roots follow this with a concert at Hordern Pavilion in Sydney on Thursday, January 2 before their final stop at Eatons Hill Outdoors in Brisbane on Friday, January 3.

Pre-sale tickets for Frontier Members go on sale Tuesday, September 10 at 12:30am local time. You can register here. General on-sale begins on Wednesday, September 11 at 1:30am local time via Frontier Touring.

Co-founded by childhood friends Black Thought and Questlove way back in 1987, The Roots have endured as one of hip hop culture’s most successful and endearing acts.

Getting their start in Philly performing at underground gigs, The Roots released their debut album, Organix, in 1993. The record created a buzz around the band that led to them signing with DGC Records, but it wasn’t until the release of their fourth album, Things Fall Apart, that The Roots truly broke through.

The main catalyst was hit single ‘You Got Me’ featuring Erykah Badu and Eve. Although it charted moderately in the States, the song went global and helped The Roots gain an international fanbase.

The Roots have gone on to release 11 albums – their last being 2014s And Then You Shoot Your Cousin… – and became the house band for Late Night with Jimmy Fallon in 2009. The 12-piece strong act have established themselves as one of the great hip hop acts and their Australian tour is not to be missed.
