Post-hardcore had its origins in the 1980s when bands like Rites Of Spring and Fugazi explored outside the punk sound and broadened the lyrical themes. Since then, post- hardcore has grown into hybrids, fusions and expeditions into other realms of music probably thought too daring just decades ago.
Adelaide’s House In The Tall Grass are on their own pursuit of post-hardcore evolution. Their formula on the new single ‘The Sailor Who Fell From Grace’ is one which incorporates the historic trailblazers with more modern, revered acts.
A tender indie rock fuzz-tone introduction recalls the criminally underrated HUM before becoming a hypnosis of tranquility for the first verse. Then an outburst of increased tempo and heavier pulses take over with aggressively screamed lyrics that emits the fantastic fierceness of Touché Amoré. HITG are utilising both the past and present to carve their post-hardcore persona and it is remarkable.
The track follows this loud/quiet dynamic exquisitely for its entirety, however the quartet sprinkles in elements of math-rock which escalates to mathcore realms superbly. It is an enchanting addition.
Sounds like: Ian MacKaye performing with La Dispute during the basement scene of the early 2000s.
