It’s a good day when you discover a new Jamie Lena song. The emerging alt-folk artist has been quietly compiling a layered and complex back catalogue since 2022, releasing tender new track ‘My Admiration’ in late January.
Written like a late-night journal entry, the sub-three- minute song pinpoints perfectly the awkward but beautiful feelings that emerge when falling in love with someone for the first time. The silly self-doubt, sweaty palms and sinking butterflies of this infatuation are translated through the gentle plucking of a double bass and some soft twinkling chimes; the late introduction of tempered percussion only adds a welcome intensity to this swirling and swelling song.
However, the letter-like perspective of ‘My Admiration’ is the track’s greatest strength. “I’m not scared to say
I want you/How do you like it?/Do you want me too?” lilts Lena, her heart-on-sleeve confession capturing the weird muddle of emotions that can only be induced by a thumpingly large crush. Heavy-hearted yet full of hope, ‘My Admiration’ is an exciting second taste of what’s to come from this artist’s forthcoming EP. We’re eagerly awaiting more.
Sounds like: That ‘I have a crush’ feeling that makes you somehow feel sick yet invincible at the same time.
