It would be reductive to call The Munch a “punk band”. The young four-piece have gone from strength to strength since the release of their debut single ‘Pass By’ in 2022, even playing support for Melbourne heavyweights, CIVIC. And with their guttural new track ‘Stills’, they’re carving out a very noisy niche in the Australian music ecosystem that’s refreshing and impossible to define.
‘Stills’ absolutely tortures the idea of traditional song structure – as soon as you get comfortable and think you might have half an idea of where it’s going, The Munch throw it all out the window again. It’s dark, discordant and frustrated, opening with a sequence that feels like being stuck inside the head of someone having an argument. The instrumentation pulses as you listen to your adversary, tensions running high, and then you’re thrown back into chaos as you shout back with unrestrained emotion.
The track plays deftly with genre throughout the six- minute song, ricocheting at breakneck speed through influences from punk and emo to noise-rock and hardcore. It’s high-energy, intense and grabs you by the collar, daring you to look away. We can’t wait for what comes next.
The Munch launch ‘Stills’ at The Metro on December 9; see the gig guide for more info.
Sounds like: A very satisfying verbal dispute.
