DEC 8 - NOTEWORTHY NEW RELEASES
YORKE HEATH | SUMMER RAIN (SINGLE)
If you haven’t started listening to Yorke Heath yet, you better start today. The third single from the rising indie artist, ‘Summer Rain’, arrives in collaboration with Adelaide producer Sacredd and pushes Yorke’s developing catalogue towards the soft-rock-rap space Post Malone comfortably occupies. The track is a modern-day love song. Solid bars meet a bedroom-pop sound and lyrics that speak to a summer lust we’re all guilty of developing with somebody at a house party. What’s more, the ‘Summer Rain’ music video is equally awesome. Partially crowdfunded by Adelaide fans and developed with Far From Studios, the three-minute track has been reimagined as pool-side summer sesh with a surprise visit from some Zombies. Intrigued? THUNDER SPEAKS — FREE (SINGLE)
Thunder Speaks latest single ‘FREE’ is an enjoyable ear assault that punches its way into your mind and reminds you that this three-piece isn’t here to mess around. With its paced bass beat, the four-minute track makes you want to mosh (even if you’re writing this review while sitting in an open-plan office) and adds a darker energy to the electro-rock outfit’s ever-growing synth-laced catalogue. Having already supported seminal Australian acts like Regurgitator and The Crystal Method (US), Thunder Speaks ability to produce an immense noise is something to be studied. And, if anything, the three-piece is a lesson in why a twin bass should be something all bands consider. For fans of bands like Royal Blood, ‘FREE’ is a must-listen song of the moment.
TELL MAMA — SUNDRENCHED (SINGLE)
Dripping in smooth neo-soul sounds, Tell Mama’s ‘Sundrenched’ is a track to add to any dinner party playlist. The penultimate song on the outfit’s debut album, Console Me, ‘Sundrenched’ wraps its way around you with its honeyed vocals and jazz-like piano playing in perfect harmony. It’s pure magic. However, our favourite moment arrives halfway through the four-minute song, when the track breaks down into a tight percussion solo before giving way to Grace Mensforth’s powerful voice. The album is an absolute treat to listen to also – take our word on it, hit play now.
PINES | LOST (SINGLE)
Pines have been carving out their own space in the global electronic scene for almost a decade, and their latest release, ‘Lost’, is a four-and-a-half-minute demonstration of why they’re loved the world over. The track’s atmospheric opening and lilting lyrics build a suspense that shatters perfectly when the beat drops and gives way to a groove that feels euphoric. The energy ebbs and flows throughout the song, and while the listener may be ‘Lost’, there’s a real freedom that arrives from knowing you’ll be found on the dancefloor. We're counting down the days until their two-piece drop their album next year!
PART TIME LOVERS — NEW GIRL (SINGLE)
We’re suckers for a classic indie-rock love song, so it’s no surprise that Part Time Lovers' third single has been on repeat in The Note office since it dropped on December 1. Opening with a catchy guitar hook, the summer vibes are palpable from the onset of this song. The track follows the usual indie blueprint, but the five-piece print has put its own happy-go-lucky stamp on the standard formula. The result? A romance-tinged anthem for all the lovers out there. Sweet but not sickly. A big tick from us!
