CROWN & ANCHOR TO BE INDUCTED INTO THE AMC SA MUSIC HALL OF FAME
The announcement comes as the #savethecranker campaign picks up steam.
As the fight for the future of the Crown & Anchor continues, the Adelaide Music Collective (AMC) has announced the heritage-listed venue will be inducted into the South Australian Music Hall of Fame.
Founded by Adelaide radio legend David ‘Dasiy’ Day, the SA Music Hall of Fame recognises and celebrates the most successful bands, artists, venues and music personalities who hail from our great state.
“Congratulations to the Crown and Anchor Hotel on its pending induction into the AMC SA Music Hall Of Fame,” reads a statement from AMC.
“The hotel will be inducted as a 'Venue' for its decades of commitment to 'Original Live Music', becoming a hub for generations of Adelaide and South Australian artists and musicians.”
The statement continues: “The 'Cranker' as it is affectionately known by its patrons, joins fellow inner-city venues, The Grace Emily, The Wheatsheaf Hotel (Wheaty), and The Governor Hindmarsh (Gov) in being recognised for its (their) contribution to South Australia's rich musical heritage.
“Established in 1853, the Crown & Anchor has become part of Adelaide's east-end folklore and a hallmark of the city's music culture. Long may this legacy continue, giving a voice to the creative expression of South Australia's nascent musicians.”
The announcement comes as the 170-year-old watering hole finds itself under threat from developers. Singaporean developer Wee Hur Holdings Ltd recently lodged documents with the state’s planning permission committee to build student accommodation on the site.
“We are honoured to have been inducted alongside other incredible venues. We love live music and hope to continue our legacy for many more decades to come,” the pub custodians said in a statement about their induction, which you can read in full opposite.
A petition to save the Cranker has been set up and currently has over 18,000 signatures. A successful council meeting was held last week that saw Deputy Lord Mayor Keiran Snape pass a motion for the Lord Mayor to write to state premier Peter Malinauskas and other leaders about the situation and get them involved. The Greens also revealed they would introduce a motion to the State Government to oppose the demolition or adaptive reuse of the Cranker. You can read all about the meeting and what went down here.
You can do your bit by signing the petition, following the ‘Save the Cranker’ campaign and supporting all local venues by stopping in for a pint or watching a gig.
