Alternative rock group The Jesus and Mary Chain are celebrating 40 years as a band with a five-date tour of Australia.

The pioneering experimental act has been defying musical boundaries for decades and their return to our shores this August is fantastic news for the band’s devoted following.

The tour hits six of the best venues in Australia, with things getting underway at the Enmore Theatre in Sydney on Thursday, August 1.

The Scottish icons then play Brisbane’s The Tivoli on Saturday, August 3, Melbourne’s The Forum on Sunday, August 4, and Adelaide’s Hindley Street Music Hall on Tuesday, August 6, before finishing off with a final show in Perth at the Astor Theatre on Thursday, August 8.

Early bird pre-sale begins this Friday, May 3 at 11:30am local time. You can register here. General tickets go on sale Wednesday, May 8 at 11:30am local time via SBM Presents.

Founded by songwriting brothers Jim and William Reid in 1983, The Jesus and Mary Chain are revered for their contribution to the shoegaze and alternative genres. Although their highest charting album Darklands – which reached #5 on the UK Album Chart – came out in 1987, the band’s experimental sound and knack for writing catchy, post-punk anthems has seen them gain a loyal following over the years.

Despite an ever-changing lineup that included Primal Scream’s Bobbie Gillespie, the band’s popularity in America rose during the 90s with the release of albums Honey’s Dead and Stoned & Dethroned. Tensions between the Reid brothers also increased during this period and things came to a head after an incident on tour in 1998, with the band officially disbanding in 1999.

After pursuing their own projects for several years, The Jesus and Mary Chain reunited in 2007 with a performance at Coachella and continued to play live sporadically. They eventually got back in the studio and released their much anticipated seventh album Damage and Joy in 2017. Despite mixed reviews, the album proved a successful comeback.

This year’s Glasgow Eyes, the band’s eighth long player, is a return to form, peaking at #7 on the UK Album Chart and receiving favourable reviews from the critics.

Catch The Jesus and Mary Chain at Hindley Street Music Hall on Tuesday, August 6. Tickets are on sale via Moshtix.
