lost Johnny Cash album, songwriter, coming this June

21 years after his passing, a new Johnny Cash album is set for release later this year. Songwriter was recorded in the early 90s when Cash was struggling to stay relevant, but after meeting Rick Rubin, changing his musical direction and finding success, the album was left by the wayside.

After recently finding the original tapes, Cash’s son John Carter Cash has decided to release them to the world, although not without some changes.

While Cash was in fine form vocally, John was not impressed with the band and got the instrumental parts (bar Cash’s guitar work) for each song re-recorded.

He recruited guitarist Marty Stuart and the late bassist Dave Roe, both of whom were part of Cash’s band in the 80s and 90s. Other guests on the album include the Black Keys guitarist Dan Auerbach and country legend Vince Gill.

Fans can get an early taste of the album by listening to the single ‘Well Alright’, which is quintessential Cash.

Songwriter is set for release on Friday, June 28.

new Midnight Oil documentary to open Sydney Film Festival

Midnight Oil: The Hardest Line is the latest documentary focusing on Aussie legends the Oils.

Written and directed by Paul Clarke, the doco details the band’s 45-year career and will premiere at this year’s Sydney Film Festival on June 5.

“This documentary not only chronicles the formidable journey of one of Australia’s most influential bands, but also captures the spirit of an era that reshaped our cultural and political landscapes,” said Sydney Film Festival director Nashen Moodley in a statement.

“When Australia was creaking under the weight of its own myths, they told us the truth. Their songs pinpoint the fault lines in our culture, they rage against the strange and dangerous times we’ve lived through, and they offer hope. After following them [as filmmakers] for seven years, we thank ‘The Oils’ and we feel we have an important film to share,” said Clarke.

Midnight Oil: The Hardest Line will debut at this year’s Sydney Film Festival on June 5.

Pierce the Veil release studio version of Radiohead cover

Appearing on triple j’s Like a Version for the first time last year, San Diego pop punkers Pierce the Veil wowed listeners with their cover of the Radiohead classic, ‘Karma Police’.

Now the trio of Vic Fuentes, Tony Perry and Jamie Preciado have dropped a studio recording of the cover.

It’s fairly true to the original version, albeit with a little more kick. Fuentes does a reasonable job on the vocals too, which is quite the compliment considering how unique Thom Yorke’s voice is.

“We are products of the 80s and 90s MTV era, so songs like ‘Karma Police’ live deep within our childhood minds,” said Pierce the Veil in a collective statement as reported by Consequence.

“We dug this one up as an opportunity to indulge in something comforting and familiar. Taking inspiration from the memories and emotions the song evokes in us, we created a version that reflects where we come from as a band. We were happy to discover that the song remained haunting and beautiful even when fed through distortion pedals and loud guitars.”

The moody blues founding mike pinder passes away

The last original member of The Moody Blues, keyboardist Mike Pinder, has sadly passed away at the age of 82.

A statement about Pinder’s death was shared by the family via former band member John Lodge: “Michael Thomas Pinder died on Wednesday, April 24th, 2024 at his home in Northern California, surrounded by his devoted family.

“Michael’s family would like to share with his trusted friends and caring fans that he passed peacefully. His final days were filled with music, encircled by the love of his family. Michael lived his life with a childlike wonder, walking a deeply introspective path which fused the mind and the heart.”

The statement continued: “He created his music and the message he shared with the world from this spiritually grounded place; as he always said, ‘Keep your head above the clouds, but keep your feet on the ground.’ His authentic essence lifted up everyone who came into contact with him. His lyrics, philosophy, and vision of humanity and our place in the cosmos will touch generations to come.”

The Moody Blues formed in 1964, comprising Pinder, guitarist Denny Laine, drummer Graeme Edge, woodwind player and vocalist Ray Thomas and bassist Clint Warwick. They got noticed after releasing a cover of ‘Go Now’, first recorded by Bessie Banks, but it took several more years and a couple of lineup changes before they finally hit their stride and became pioneers of the progressive rock movement.
