ENERGY ANGEL – ‘THIS WON’T CHANGE’
SINGLE
Independent
The first joint on Energy Angel’s debut EP, ‘This Won’t Change’ spends its runtime doing just that – running. From what, specifically, it’s not entirely clear but its unrelenting momentum encapsulates a growing sense of frustration with the general tedium of adulthood. The galloping groove and serrated shoegaze guitars bring to mind Nothing (the band, that is, not the all-encompassing weight of zero) in a way that reaches the same lofty heights as the best tracks on 2020’s The Great Dismal.
For all that, ‘This Won’t Change’ sees the outfit fashioning something far sharper and more sinewy than a lot of their most obvious influences. The combination of raw punk energy and existential themes makes you feel like a reveller on a sinking ship; it’s as though Energy Angel are telling us everything might be going under, but it doesn’t mean we can’t scream our favourite songs together while we’re still breathing.
