Meg Washington Announces Australian Tour
The renowned artist is touring in late November and December in support of her new single, ‘The Hook’.
Remember Meg Washington? She became a triple j darling in the mid-00s, with her debut album I Believe You Liar taking out two ARIA Awards in 2010, before slowly fading into the background of the Oz music scene.
While she might not have the commercial appeal of yesteryear, Washington has continued to perform regularly and release some incredible music, including her latest single, ‘The Hook’.
A warm and sunny pop ditty, ‘The Hook’ is the first single from the soundtrack to the new Aussie movie, How to Make Gravy. Washington and her husband Nick Waterman adapted the classic Paul Kelly tune for the big screen, with the Christmas movie starring Hugo Weaving, Daniel Henshall, Briggs, Baker Boy and French actress Agathe Rousselle. The flick is set for release on Christmas Day and you can watch the teaser trailer here.
To celebrate the release of ‘The Hook’ and the upcoming soundtrack to How To Make Gravy, Washington has announced a run of shows throughout November and December.
Beginning at the J Theatre on the Sunshine Coast on Saturday, November 23, the tour then heads to Sydney’s Opera House on Wednesday, November 27, Adelaide’s Trinity Sessions on Friday, November 29 and Brisbane’s The Princess Theatre on Thursday, December 12, before Washington heads back to the Sunshine Coast for a gig at Event Centre Playhouse on Saturday, December 14.
The last three dates of the tour take place at Hobart’s Altar Bar on Wednesday, December 18, Frankston’s Arts Centre on Friday, December 20 and Melbourne’s Forum on Saturday, December 21.
Joining Washington on the road is rising artist Jacob Diamond.
Tickets for all shows go on sale this Thursday, October 3 at 11:30am local time via meganwashington.com.
Following on from her previously released 2024 single ‘Honeysuckle Island’, new tune ‘The Hook’ samples French electronic music producer Petit Biscuit's breakout hit ‘Sunset Lover’.
Speaking about ‘The Hook’, which you can listen to above, Washington says: "For ages, I kept hearing this song everywhere I went. It sounded like a perfect pop instrumental that was just aching for a melody and a lyric. I loved the chopped up vocal hook and I wanted to respect it by preserving it within the story of the lyrics. It ended up wanting to be a break-up on a beach.”
The soundtrack to How To Make Gravy also includes songs from Paul Kelly, Beddy Rays, Nina Simone and Electric Fields & The Prison Choir. You can pre-order the limited edition vinyl of the soundtrack in brown, yellow, white or red now via Suitcase Records.
