Exciting things are happening in the Street Legal camp. The Adelaide synth-pop act are celebrating the release of their debut EP, Bruxism, with an Australian tour.
Named after the medical term for grinding your teeth, something vocalist Matt Hayward suffers from, Bruxism is a pulsating four-track release exposing all of Hayward’s fears and anxieties.
“Over the past few years, I realised I’d been grinding my teeth in my sleep - a side effect of anxiety and the stress of the world around us. That restless energy worked its way into these songs,” explains Hayward in a statement about the EP. “Bruxism explores the dangers of populism, the weight of anxiety, and the cycles we find ourselves stuck in, like a snake eating its own tail. But at its heart, it’s about finding connection and hope, even when times feel tough.”
Street Legal have locked in five dates across April, beginning with a gig at Newcastle’s Hamilton Station Hotel on Thursday, April 17. The quartet then hit Sydney’s Darling Nikki’s on Friday, April 18, Newtown’s Botany View Hotel on Saturday, April 19 and Melbourne’s Persa Bar on Friday, April 25, with the tour culminating in a hometown show at Adelaide’s Jive Bar on Saturday, April 26.
Tickets for all five dates are on sale now via this link.

Bruxism was recorded with Matt Schultz (The Empty Threats/Twine) and mixed by Grammy Award-winning engineer Hugo Nicolson (Radiohead, Father John Misty), with the EP featuring the previously released single ‘Cardio’ and cracking new tune, ‘No Gods! No Masters! No Doorlists! No Bouncers’.
“‘No Gods…’ is a tongue-in-cheek look at the chaos of modern dating in the digital age - swiping, misreading signals, and falling in and out of love in a matter of seconds,” explains Matt. “The modern format/retro aesthetic of the music video perfectly complements the modern retro vibe of the song, as well as giving a nod to old Australian classic music videos including Hunter & Collectors and INXS.”
Street Legal also shared a fun music video for the song directed by Harry Kellaway and featuring Yoz Mensch.
