ICONIC SUNBURY POP FESTIVAL RETURNS IN 2024

Celebrating the 50th anniversary of Australia’s very own Woodstock.

50 years on from the iconic Sunbury Pop Festival, Hume City Council is resurrecting the Australian Woodstock this April to commemorate its 50th anniversary. Paying tribute to the event in the best way possible, many of the original acts that played the first Sunbury are on the bill. Ross Wilson and The Peaceniks, Richard Clapton, Joe Camilleri and The Black Sorrows, Bob ‘Bongo’ Starkie’s Skyhooks Show, Margret Roadknight, Spectrum, Madder Lake and Matt Taylor and Phil Manning from Chain will all feature.
Along with the golden oldies, there will be several contemporary stars taking the stage, including multi-ARIA nominee Emma Donovan, Karen Lee-Andrews and Sheldon Riley, proving the wealth of Australian musical talent the country has to offer.
Not only will there be great music on offer, but an array of food stalls and licensed beverage vendors will be on hand to keep your belly full and your thirst quenced. In the lead up to Sunbury '24, Hume City Council is running several community events, including activities for children, a family trivia night and a screening of the Sunbury '72 documentary.
What’s even better is the price, with tickets going for just $30, making it arguably the cheapest festival in Australia.
The original Sunbury Pop Festival helped pave the way for modern events such as Splendour in the Grass and the Big Day Out. At its peak, it pulled in roughly 45,000 punters and was Australia’s first annual music festival. Not only was it a showcase of local talent, but several big international acts played, including Queen and Deep Purple. Sadly, like many other Aussie festivals, Sunbury went the way of the dodo in 1975, just four years after the first festival was held. Despite ending in tears, Sunbury remains a major cultural event in Australian history and one well worth celebrating.
Sunbury ‘24 will take place on Saturday, April 13 at The Nook, Vaughan Street, Sunbury. Running from 2 pm to 9 pm, tickets are just $30 and children under the age of 18 can enter for free, providing they are accompanied by an adult at all times.
