Rumours have been swirling for months surrounding the cast of Sam Mendes’ Beatles films, and this week (April 1), the cat has finally been let out of the bag.
The actors playing the Fab Four were unveiled at CinemaCon, with rising newcomer Harris Dickinson playing John Lennon, Paul Mescal taking on the role of Paul McCartney, Barry Keoghan bringing Ringo Starr to life, and Joseph Quinn cast as George Harrison.
Dickinson is best known for his breakout role in Babygril, while Mescal has been winning fans with his turn as Lucius Verus in Gladiator II, although many know him from his incredible performance in the Irish romantic drama series Normal People. Keoghan has blown up in recent years thanks to his work in The Banshees of Inisherin and Saltburn, with Quinn best known for playing Arthur Havisham in Stranger Things.
As per The Guardian, director Mendes called the Beatles “the most significant band of all time” at CinemaCon, with the Oscar winner also revealing the story was “too big” to tell in one movie and didn’t work as a TV series, hence splitting it across four films.
He added: “There had to be a way to tell the epic story for a new generation. I can assure you there is still plenty left to explore and I think we found a way to do that.”
Mendes also revealed the four films will be released in the month of April 2028.

There have been plenty of films about the Beatles released over the years, including Peter Jackson’s three-part doco series, The Beatles: Get Back, but these new films mark the first time the two remaining members of the Beatles, Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, along with the families of Lennon and Harrison and their company, Apple Corps, have agreed to grant the rights to their story for someone to turn into a movie.
While the majority of feedback has been positive, questions have been asked about the actors’ ages, along with the fact that none of the four are from Liverpool. Dickenson and Quinn are both English-born, but Mescal and Keoghan hail from Ireland, with many taking to social media to express their disappointment that now Scousers have been cast.
Only time will tell if the four can ‘Come Together’ and deliver an accurate and entertaining set of films tracing the Beatles’ epic career.
The Beatles movies are set for release in April 2028.
