Perfect Pair: Balter Cerveza X ‘48 Roses’ By Mariachi El Bronx

Tumblers and turntables at the ready…

TASTING NOTES

Balter Cerveza: Founded by six Aussies (including surf champion Mick Fanning) and a Yank in 2016, Balter has quickly established itself as one of Australia’s top craft breweries. One of the label’s more underrated drops is the Cerveza, a true gem in the brewery’s selection. Taking out GABS Hottest 100 New Release category in 2023, Balter Cerveza is a Mexican-style lager with a sweet, crisp mouth taste. Light on hops, this golden pale brew is all about refreshment, making it ideal for a summer sesh.

SLEEVE NOTES

‘48 Roses’ by Mariachi El Bronx: Californian hardcore act The Bronx flipped the script in 2009, releasing an album of Mariachi-influenced tunes under the moniker Mariachi El Bronx. It proved a stroke of genius, with the band arguably finding greater fame as a Mariachi band than their previous incarnation. History lesson aside, ’48 Roses’ is one of the band’s standout tunes taken from their incredible self-titled second album. There’s also the added buzz of hearing vocalist Matt Caughthran swap screaming for joyful crooning over guitars, trumpets, violins and traditional Mexican instruments. It will warm the cockles of your heart.

THEY’RE PERFECTLY PAIRED BECAUSE...

If you ever find yourself in a local Mexican bar drinking a Corona, there’s a strong chance you’ll be serenaded by a Mariachi band at some point. Unlikely to happen here in Adelaide, the closest you can get to achieving that experience is by cracking open a bottle of Balter Cerveza and pressing play on Mariachi El Bronx’s up-tempo ’48 Roses’. More flavoursome than a Corona, the Cerveza will invigorate as the majestic ’48 Roses’ lifts your spirits, making for a wonderful combo that could easily lead to a lazy day working your way through a six-pack while soaking up Mariachi El Bronx’s discography.
