Perfect Pair: Jean Bouteille's ‘Pirate’ x ‘Bonnie and Clyde’ by Serge Gainsbourg and Brigitte Bardot
Tumblers and turntables at the ready...
TASTING NOTES
Jean Bouteille ‘Pirate’: Crafted by French-born winemaker Jean Baptiste Courdesses, the juice of this eponymous label is unearthed from the Adelaide Hills hamlet Basket Range – an undulating region that’s a hotbed for lo-fi, minimal wine. Rebellious in nature, Jean Bouteille drops are made using 100 percent whole bunch grapes, with no fining, no filtration and minimal sulphur. His Merlot/Semillon blend wine ‘Pirate’ is perhaps one of the finest examples of this process – a fresh medium red that’s been fermented, foot-stomped and left to age in a French oak barrel for eight months before bottling. Slightly spiced, seductive and served chilled, this is the ideal date night drop.
SLEEVE NOTES
‘Bonnie and Clyde’ by Serge Gainsbourg and Brigitte Bardot: Released in 1968 by French-born Brigitte Bardot and Serge Gainsbourg, this French pop track is inspired by a poem, The Trails End, written by the notorious Bonnie Parker weeks before she and her outlaw lover Clyde Barrow were killed. A screen siren, Bardot’s musical career peaked in this collaboration (and affair) with French songwriter and provocateur Serge Gainsbourg. Her breathy, seductive vocals pair with Gainsbourg’s smooth, charismatic delivery. Today, this sultry, evocative duet reflects the ’60s drive for rebellion and romance.
THEY’RE PERFECTLY PAIRED BECAUSE...
Both blend rebellion and romance with a hedonistic attitude. An air of seductiveness courses through Jean Bouteille’s ‘Pirate’ and Serge Gainsbourg and Brigitte Bardot’s ‘Bonnie and Clyde’. The former captures their energy with the flirtatious, fruit-driven notes that emerge from Courdesses’ minimal-intervention methods. This mirrors the sultry, rebellious essence of the latter, where Gainsbourg and Bardot capture the allure and defiance of 1960s French pop. Together, they evoke an irresistible blend of seductive elegance, making them a match for an evening of indulgent, carefree romance.
