Perfect Pair: 78 Degrees Australian Whiskey x ‘Red’ by Daniel Merriweather
Tumblers and turntables at the ready…
TASTING NOTES
78 Degrees Australian Whiskey: The first whiskey distilled by Adelaide favourites 78 Degrees, this uniquely Aussie drop is made from locally sourced ingredients with a focus on quality and sustainability. This multiple award-winning whiskey has sweet notes of vanilla and caramel, which give way to a chocolatey, muesli-like taste in the mouth. The sip ends with a spicy finish reminiscent of your grandma’s fruitcake that’ll have your tastebuds rejoicing. This is arguably one of the best local whiskeys on offer (which also comes with a reasonable price tag). We recommend sipping this one neat or with a block of ice – keep those sugary mixers away.
SLEEVE NOTES
‘Red’ by Daniel Merriweather: In 2009, Daniel Merriweather dropped his debut album Love & War, secured his second ARIA award and then vanished. Ok, he’s still alive and kicking. But besides the occasional collab, Merriweather’s output has been sparse. While this is sad, the Melbourne-born singer-songwriter did gift us ‘Red’, his second UK Top Ten charting single from Love & War. Produced by Mark Ronson – who also recruited Merriweather to sing on his reimagining of The Smiths’ ‘Stop Me If You Think You’ve Heard This One Before’ – the song takes inspiration from classic Motown artists and finds Merriweather crooning soulfully over a breezy ‘60s arrangement.
THEY’RE PERFECTLY PAIRED BECAUSE...
78 Degrees and Daniel Merriweather are both Aussie creatives who have taken influence from their heroes (Scottish whisky and American soul, respectively) and developed their own distinct flavour and sound. 78 Degrees recall the great Scottish whisky brands with a full-bodied Aussie zest that gives it a point of difference; Daniel Merriweather instills ‘Red’ with the smooth neo-soul of Stax Records and a modern twist. These are best enjoyed together with friends on a sunny Sunday arvo.
