Returning as part of this year’s Adelaide Festival, the creative exhibit Neoterica is a significant and expansive survey exhibition. Located at the Northeastern Concourse of the Adelaide Railway Station on North Terrace, this intriguing display brings together the work of 20 South Australian mid-career artists, along with 20 writers tasked with offering their takes on the work. Neoterica is a celebration of the local arts community and the landscapes of South Australia as seen through the veil of artists and writers.
Curated, produced and led by talented local artist Ray Harris, with support from Adele Sliuzas (Writing Coordinator), Sandy Cenin (Exhibition Manager), Cynthia Schwertsik (Public Programming / Project Support) and Anna Goodhind (Installation Manager), this is the second edition of Neoterica, following on from the successful 2020 event. The exhibition places a spotlight on contemporary South Australian artists through a range of concepts and ideas across photography, painting, printmaking, performance, sculpture, installation, video, sound, ceramics, and mixed media.
The artists involved in this must-see installation are Eleanor Alice, Jenn Brazier, Fran Callen, Makeda Duong, Deirdre Feeney, Keith Giles, Gail Hocking, Sam Howie, Matt Huppatz, Simone Kennedy, Bernadette Klavins, Kate Kurucz, Tristan Louth-Robins, Riza Manalo, Sue Ninham, Sonja Porcaro, Jess Taylor, Cassie Thring, Sarah Tickle, and Raymond Zada.
Each piece of art is accompanied by a written response from one of 20 South Australian writers, giving their reflections and thoughts on the art. This pairing of artists and writers who have never worked with each other before aims to forge new bonds and relationships between artists and writers.
The featured writers are Lilla Berry, Nic Brown, Quentin Brown, Nicole Clift, Melanie Cooper, Jennifer Eadie, Piri Eddy, Caitlin Eyre, Maire Falcinella, Paul Gazzola, Sasha Grbich, Tegan Hale, Alysha Herrmann, Denise Nolasco, Anisha Pillarisetty, Meg Riley, Eleanor Scicchitano, Kathie Stove, Ash Tower and Aushaf Widisto.
Neoterica is a fantastic initiative that permits local artists and writers to engage with each other while allowing audiences to discover and support talented creators and understand the diverse nature of South Australia’s burgeoning arts community.
Neoterica is a free event that runs until April 14 at the Northeastern Concourse, Adelaide Railway Station, North Terrace, Adelaide.
