South Australia’s family-owned music store, Billy Hyde Music, has returned to the Adelaide CBD with a brand new Superstore.
Located at 198 Waymouth Street, the new store offers all the usual musical-related gear and instruments, including guitars, drums, keyboards, DJ equipment, PA gear and more, along with a dedicated amp room and acoustic guitar showcase.
The new Superstore also features five “try out rooms” where customers can test instruments before they buy in soundproof rooms.
The creation of these “try out rooms” offers customers an experience they can’t gain by shopping online, something Store Manager Mark Oosterveld believes sets Billy Hyde apart from their online competition.
“Of course there are some customers who know exactly what they want and are happy to buy online, and we have a website for that also. But music is one of those things that you really need to experience,” he says.
“It has spirit and soul, and we find people buying instruments really want to touch and play something before they buy it, which is where a store like ours is so important. There’s a lot of instruments here to check out, and just as importantly, helpful staff who can offer advice for those who need it.”

The opening of the Superstore comes after the Marletson Superstore was forced to close due to the construction of the North-South Corridor. While unfortunate, Oosterveld believes it to be a silver lining, with the new Superstore providing “more room, more open space [and] more instruments.”
Staffed by knowledgeable music lovers and musicians, including members of Hindley Street Country Club, you’ll be hard pressed to find a better range of instruments and musical equipment on offer in the state.
The new Superstore is just a stone’s throw away from The Grace Emily and the soon-to-be-reopened Ed Castle (the new home of the Cranker), placing the store smack bang in the middle of the West End’s lively music scene.
The Lord Mayor Dr Jane Lomax Smith AM officially opened the store last month, commenting: “Having a Billy Hyde Music store in the epicentre of Australia’s only UNESCO Creative City of Music – not to mention within a stone’s throw from our favourite live music venues – is a real bonus.”
These sentiments were echoed by Adelaide City of Music General Manager Joe Hay. “Adelaide’s UNESCO City of Music designation is underpinned by our historic and ongoing commitment and love for music culture, and by individuals and companies such as Billy Hyde Music who call Adelaide home. The City of Music office was proud to attend the opening and congratulate Billy Hyde on the opening of their new Superstore on Waymouth Street.”
