Josh Tillman has announced his sixth album under the Father John Misty moniker, Mahashmashana, arriving November 22 via Sub Pop (pre-order/pre-save here).

News of the record comes just a few months after the enigmatic singer-songwriter dropped his first compilation album, Greatish Hits… I Followed My Dreams and My Dreams Said To Crawl.

Along with sharing the album artwork and tracklisting for Mahashmashana, Tillman has released new single, ‘Screamland’. Following the previously released eight-and-a-half-minute epic ‘I Guess Times Just Makes Fools Of Us All’, Tillman’s latest is another enduring guitar ballad with a soaring chorus.

‘Screamland’ features Low’s Alan Sparhawk on guitar and strings arranged by Drew Erickson, who also co-produced the album with Tillman. You can watch the Estegania Kröl-directed music video for the track below.

Speaking about the clip, Kröl says: “The video is a visual journey through the depths of ‘Screamland,’ capturing the essence of both the music and the artists. Father John Misty blends seamlessly into the scene, becoming a part of the city, a living echo of ‘Screamland.’”

According to the Sub Pop website, the album takes its title from the Sanskrit word Mahāśmaśāna (महामशान), which translates to “great cremation ground, all things going thither.”

The website also reveals a one-sentence phrase describing the album: “After a decade being born, Josh Tillman is finally busy dying.” Make of that what you will.
