Kim Deal, a former member of 80s alt-rockers Pixies and co-founder of 90s grunge act the Breeders, has dropped her first solo single in a decade. ‘Coast’ is a tropical rock tune from the singer and guitarist that was produced by the late, great Steve Albini at his Chicago studio, Electrical Audio.
Released by famed British label 4AD, the track also includes the Breeders alum Mando Lopez on bass, Kim’s sister Kelley on guitar and horns from the Chicago marching band Mucca Pazza.
According to a press release, Deal wrote ‘Coast’ after attending her friend Mike Montgomery’s wedding in 2020. As she watched the house band, The Grape Whizzers, perform a cover of Jimmy Buffet’s ‘Margaritaville’ with “revelatory levels of low self-esteem,” Deal was inspired to pen the tune. She also drew on her own terrible experience staying on the Massachusetts island of Nantucket in the year 2000.

It’s insane to think Deal hasn’t released more solo material over the years, with ‘Coast’ arriving ten years after she released a string of singles between 2013-2014, with the last being the double A-side ‘Biker Gone’ and ‘Beautiful Moon Clear’.
Deal originally got her start with the Pixies, playing with the ‘Where Is My Mind’ creators from 1986 to 1993 until they parted ways, and then from 2004 to 2013 when they got back together.
During her first stint with the Pixies, Deal also founded side project the Breeders, which took off in 1993 thanks to the hit single ‘Cannonball’. The band enjoyed much success throughout the 90s before breaking up in 2003, just before the Pixies reformed.
Touring the globe with the Pixies, Deal also revived the Breeders again in 2008, releasing the album Mountain Battles. She decided to leave the Pixies in 2013 and concentrate on the Breeders, with the original lineup coming together and continuing to tour, having recently supported pop superstar Olivia Rodrigo on her North American tour.
