You Am I lead guitarist Davey Lane has surprise dropped a new album of covers. Released via Cheersquad Records & Tapes, How To Make Davey. Volume One is an 11-track album of covers from some of Lane’s favourite artists.
Highlights from the digital-only release include covers of Supergrass’ ‘In It for the Money’, Hall & Oates’ ‘Go Solo’, the Band'‘s ‘Whispering Pines’ and Curtis Mayfield’s ‘Future Shock’.
“Covers albums by my most beloved artists are usually my least favourite. And yet, here I am, foisting one upon you, dear listener,” Lane said in a press release.
“I’m a self-taught musician, so for me recording covers was a great way of forensically pulling apart songs I love, finding out what makes them tick, and putting em back together. A science experiment, if you will. Almost exclusively these were recorded for my friend Jon Von Goes’ radio show, JVG Radio Method, on Melbourne community radio RRR.
“This is also probably my first true ‘solo’ album, funnily enough. Everything you hear is played, sung and mixed by myself, for better or worse! The one exception being synth on ‘Go Solo’ by Tony Featherstone.”

Davey Lane’s How To Make Davey. Volume One is a precursor to the guitarist’s forthcoming new solo album, Finally, A Party Record. It follows Lane’s 2020 release Don't Bank Your Heart on It and his work on Todd Rundgren’s Space Force (2022) and Robyn Hitchcock’s 1967: Vacations in the Past (2024).
Having been a member of You Am I since 1999, Lane was also the lead singer and guitarist of The Pictures and a part of the Australian supergroup, The Wrights, which also included Jet’s Nic Cester, Powderfinger’s Bernard Fanning, Grinspoon’s Phil Jamieson, Spiderbait’s Kram, The Living End’s Chris Cheney and Dallas Crane’s Pat Bourke.
