Grinspoon is back in a big way. Last night the band took to social media and dropped the rocking new single, ‘Unknown Pretenders’. The Lismore quartet also announced their first album in 12 years, whatever, whatever, and a massive national tour that will see them on the road from September through to December.

‘Unknown Pretenders’ is the sort of ball-busting, riff-tastic rock and roll tune Grinspoon have become known for, with frontman Phil Jamieson reminding fans on the chorus, “We are unknown pretenders / Surviving in the splendour of our times.”

Speaking on the track in a press release, Jamieson explained it “was written in the dawning of the pandemic in a small studio in Adelaide, February 2022, with a number of other tunes as well. It’s a magical riffy song about the end of the world and who will actually survive.”

When it comes to the album, which is out August 9, the Grinners enlisted producer Oscar Dawson (Holy Holy, Teen Jesus and the Jean Teasers) to work his magic.

“Oscar is an incredibly talented creative, engineer, and producer,” Jamieson said. “We hadn’t worked with an Australian producer for a very long time, and it was a refreshing change. Recording with Oscar became very collaborative, he’s humble and understands the different dynamics within the band.”

As well as revealing the new single ‘Unknown Pretender’ and announcing their eighth album, whatever, whatever, Grinspoon shared the news they are embarking on a 45-date tour across the country.

The band will take in capital cities along with regional towns, kicking things off at Ballina RSL in Northern Rivers on Tuesday, September 17. The tour will continue right up until December, with the final date taking place at the Odeon Theatre in Hobart on Friday, December 6. They will be joined on the road by Melbourne’s Press Club.

“To say we’re excited is a massive understatement!” Jamieson said about the tour. “Over the last six years, we have played arenas and stadiums and theatres and whatnot, and it’s all been tremendous, and we have loved every minute of it, but there is nothing like the three-hour drive after a show, the 9am checkout from the hotel, and the first stop to get a Chicko Roll and strawberry milk - black coffee for me, I am now an adult.

“These gigs will be madness - sweaty Tuesdays, taking the day off work on a Wednesday, remembering the reason you go to pubs. Our venues are suffering out there in the regions, so we are bringing the show to them. We can’t wait to see you all!”

Fan pre-sale begins on Thursday, May 23 at 9:30am local time. General sale commences Monday, May 27 at 8:30am local time. For all ticket details head to grinspoon.com.au.
