The year’s biggest music countdown is done and dusted for another year. No, not triple j’s bang average Hottest 100, but South Australia’s own Three D Radio’s always awesome The Top 93+7.
Held last Saturday (January 25), the countdown crowned Sons of Zoku’s ‘Endless’ as the most-played release of 2024. A post on the Three D Radio Instagram congratulated the band for taking out the top spot alongside a comment about the release, “Lyrically themed around an endless search for enlightenment, the band exhibit their virtuosic creation of soundscapes to draw you into a psychedelic journey reaching for purpose and spirituality while maintaining a grounding through nature.”
The 2024 countdown was a massive celebration of South Australian music, with 95% of artists making up the 100 hailing from Oz. Of that number, a whopping 82% were Adelaide-based. This is a fantastic result that demonstrates how healthy the local scene is.
Along with securing the top spot with ‘Endless’, Sons of Zoku also came in at #60 with Endless Acoustic Songs. They weren’t the only act to place more than once in the countdown, with Cull The Band making three appearances and the likes of Ricky Albeck, Dom Sensitive, Molly Rocket and The Genevieves having multiple entries.
Speaking of The Genevieves, they came in a close second on the countdown with ‘Adore You’, while the top five was rounded out by Swapmeet’s ‘Oxalis’, Amyl And The Sniffers’ Cartoon Darkness and The Genevieves’ ‘Bloody Nose’.
When it came to the interstate acts to make the list, the likes of Amyl And The Sniffers,
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Emily Wurramara and King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard were all shown lots of love, while the five international acts to make the 100 were The Fadeaways (#52), The Prisoners (#71), Sleater-Kinney (#80), Goat Girl (#81) and The Hard Quartet (#94).
Three D Radio once again did a fantastic job counting down the best releases of 2024 and we are already looking forward to next year’s Top 93+7.
