Here’s a fascinating detail about waves: they do not transport matter, they in fact transport energy. Adelaide’s self-proclaimed ‘Not a Surf Rock’ band Broken Waves transport an ambient indie rock energy with their hypnotic soundscapes – soundscapes so alluring they could act as the score to a metaphoric island paradise. This paradise though, is facing destruction and the single ‘When You Feel It’ is possibly the distress signal that requires acknowledgement. The paradise could be our planet that is deteriorating due to human impact; it could be one’s fragile state of mental health; or it could be any number of matters that associate with trauma. This song acts as a cry for action, whether by an individual or an entire population to make drastic change. ‘When you feel it, you take it until you can’t anymore’, vocalist and bassist Ben Lyons-Reid and Amber Timms (keyboards) sing in harmony during the chorus. It hits like a punk rock rebellion anthem, but honestly sounds like a dreamy combination of La Luz, TTNG and The Chantays.
Broken Waves want to help these topical issues with their lush, musical energy. Feel free to ride their wonderful wave.
